Bangladesh 2013 CFC Free Metered-dose Inhaler

Bangladesh celebrated the International Ozone Day 2013 with a stamp issued on 16 September 2013, promoting the theme of CFC Free Inhaler. The top-left corner of the stamp features a person using a metered-dose inhaler or MDI as it is often called, first developed by the American doctor, George Maison, in 1955.

Norway 2012 100th Anniversary of Norwegian Nurses Organisation

Norway released on 14 September 2012 this stamp to mark the 100th anniversary of the Norwegian Nurses Organisation. The right side of the stamp shows the modern context of a hospital bed, with a multitude of machines that constantly monitors the status of a hospital patient.

Lithuania 2014 50th Anniversary of 1st open heart surgery in Lithuania

Lithuania celebrated on 11 October 2014 the 50th anniversary of the first open heart surgery in Lithuania with a stamp issue. On 14 October 1964, Prof. A. Marcinkevičius, with the participation of academician E. Meshalkin, performed a suture of congenital defect in ventricular septum for a 14-year old girl with the use of an artificial blood circulation device. The next day a suture of the defect in atrial septum was performed for a second patient. This was the beginning of the modern cardiac surgery in Lithuania.

Mexico 2014 MRI Machine

Mexico released on 22 October 2014 a stamp to mark the 75th anniverary of Philips' establishment in Mexico. The stamp features some of Philips' better known products, amongst which is the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine.

Mexico 2014 Institute of Epidemiological Diagnostics & Reference

The Mexican Post released on 17 October 2014 a stamp to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of Instituto de Diagnóstico y Referencia Epidemiológicos (Institute of Epidemiological Diagnostics & Reference). The stamp design includes an artistic rendition of the DNA helix.

Argentina 2014 Centenary of first indirect blood transfusion in the Americas

The Argentina post celebrates the centenary of the first indirect blood transfusion in the Americas with a stamp issued on 10 November 2014. Dr Luis Agote performed the operation using sodium citrate to prevent the coagulation of the collected blood, on 9 November 1914, and announced his feat via the leading Buenos Aires newspaper, “LaPresna”, instead of reporting it in a medical journal; whereas Dr Richard Lewisohn of Mt Sinai Hospital in New York reported 2 cases in which he used citrate of soda for transfusion, 2 months later in the 23 January 1915 issue of the “New York Medical Record”, The fact is that Albert Hustin, a Belgian surgeon, used sodium citrate and glucose as an anticoagulant for blood transfusion on 17 March 1914 at the St Jens Hospital in Brussels.

Hong Kong 2013 Biotechnology

6 stamps with the theme on "Innovation & Technology" was released by Hong Kong Post Office on 4 November 2013. The stamps were reproduced on an 8-sided miniature sheet. The stamp representing biotechnology, shown here, has a graphical representation of the double helix superimposed on a corn cob, probably referring to genetically modified corn.

France 2014 50th Anniversary of INSERM

The French Post released on 7 July 2014 a stamp to celebrate 50 years of INSERM (Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale) or the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research, that comprises 10 institutes covering the area:

  • Neurosciences, cognitive sciences, neurology & psychiatry
  • Cancer
  • Circulation, metabolism & nutrition
  • Immunology, hematology & pulmonology
  • Public health
  • Health technologies
  • Molecular and structural basis of living organisms
  • Cell biology, development & evolution
  • Genetics, genomics & bioinformatics
The stamp is illustrated with the image of mice motor nuclei highlighted using the Brainbow technique, a process by which individual neurons in the brain are distinguished from neighbouring neurons using fluorescent proteins to express different ratios of red, green, and blue, flagging each neuron with a distinctive colour.

Mexico 2013 25 Years of CONADE (Comisión Nacional de Cultura Física y Deporte)

Mexico released on 13 December 2013 a single stamp to mark 25 Years of CONADE, or Comisión Nacional de Cultura Física y Deporte, or National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport, in English. The stamp features cycling, taekwando, boxing and athletics, with the silhouette of Mexican female athlete silhouette, Ana Gabriela Guevara Espinoza (born March 4, 1977, in Nogales, Sonora), a retired bemedallioned track and field athlete who became a Mexican Senator. A central circle features scientific methodology for monitoring athletic performance and body vital signs, hence the stamp background is decorated with biorhythmic graphs with various icons; one of these icons, the top one on the left features a double helical representation of DNA.

Mali 2013 Nobel Prize for Medicine 2012

Shinya Yamanaka and Sir John B Gurdon were  awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for the discovery that mature cells can be converted to stem cells. The backgound of the souvenir sheets issued to commemorate them contains the helical DNA representation.
