Lithuania celebrated on 11 October 2014 the 50th anniversary of the first open heart surgery in Lithuania with a stamp issue. On 14 October 1964, Prof. A. Marcinkevičius, with the participation of academician E. Meshalkin, performed a suture of congenital defect in ventricular septum for a 14-year old girl with the use of an artificial blood circulation device. The next day a suture of the defect in atrial septum was performed for a second patient. This was the beginning of the modern cardiac surgery in Lithuania.
